Carl Nathan Galub

Carl Nathan Galub passed away on 28 May 2021, at the William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso. Services will be at 10 am Saturday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with Col. C. Jeff Swanson son in law officiating. Interment will be at Llano Cemetery. Military honors will be by Volleys for Veterans. Carl was born on 13 February, 1926, in Chicago Illinois. He lived his childhood years in Chicago and Kentucky. He and his mother, Myra, moved near Conrad, Montana, where he spent his high school years. While in Montana, Carl served the Forest Service as a Lookout near Caribou Peak Montana. He excelled in writing poems. At age 17, while in High School, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy. The day after graduation, he reported for duty at Moscow, Idaho, and volunteered for World War II combat. Rated as a Radioman, Carl served on the USS Neches, the USS Essex, and the USS Bunker Hill. He served bravely in many battles including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His ships were hit by five Kamikaze planes. The Bunker Hill was the second most damaged carrier to survive the war. Hundreds of Sailors and Marines were injured and killed on those ships. His numerous awards include Presidential Unit Citations and Eleven Battle Stars. Recently Mike Shinabery, KRSY Radio, did a two hour interview with Carl about his World War II service. Carl was a leader in the Moose Club, VFW, American Legion, and was a Shriner. He volunteered at the VA hospital in Amarillo, Texas for over a decade. Carl was a church council leader at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Amarillo Texas and managed their food distribution ministry. Carl and his wife Rosemary, moved to Alamogordo, to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jeff Swanson in 2018. Rosemary was a World War II Gold Star sister. She passed away in 2019. Carl participated in the 2019, 4 July Parade in Alamogordo with two other World War II Veterans and took great delight in waving to the citizens. Carl is survived by his daughter; Donna Swanson, spouse Jeff Swanson of Alamogordo, New Mexico, son; Russell Galub, companion Judy Olson of Caledonia, Illinois, daughter; Pamela Feally of Ozark, Alabama, and daughter; Tobey Miller, spouse Eddie Miller of Clarendon, Texas, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
