Damon Washington Benson

Damon Washington Benson, 96, of Amarillo passed away on Monday June 8, 2015 in Amarillo. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Rector Funeral Home with Melvin Darnell of Church of Christ Officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military Honors will be by Post 430 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Canyon, Texas. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Benson was born on February 1, 1919 in Leday, Coleman County, Texas to Virgil Damon and Addie Laura Johnson Benson. He moved from Eastland Texas to Amarillo in 1957. He was a mechanic, and the former owner of Mini Motors in Amarillo. Mr. Benson was a veteran of the US Navy aviation in WWII in the Pacific. He was a non-commissioned officer, Petty Officer 3/class MOMM3. At one time he was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the District Award of Merit and the Woodbadge. He was an avid outdoors-man, he enjoyed going hunting & fishing. Mr. Benson married Mary Cordelia Duncan on June 1, 1938 in Eastland County Texas. she preceded him in death on February 25, 2001. He later married Jo H. Benson on June 10, 2007. He is survived by: his wife; Jo H. Benson, a son Deryl Wayne Benson and his wife Betsy both of Amarillo, a Daughter; Mary Alice Riopel and her husband Fred of Mahalia, CA. two sisters; Neomi Cain of Rising Star, Texas and Lorene Clark of Buchanan Dam, Texas and a brother; Leo Benson of Rising Star, Texas, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. Family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations go to the Boy Scouts of America.
