Donald Leroy Mackie, a cherished family man, respected law enforcement officer, and beloved member of the Amarillo community, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on January 6, 1942, in Phillips, Texas, Donald's journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering sense of duty.
Donald was the son of the late Albert and Louise Mackie. He grew up in a world where values of integrity and hard work were instilled from a young age. After graduating from high school in Spearman, Texas, he furthered his education at West Texas A&M University, setting the stage for a life of service and community involvement.
His career in law enforcement began as a police officer, eventually leading him to serve as a Deputy Sheriff. Donald's commitment to justice and public safety earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he swore to protect. Beyond his professional life, Donald was an active member of the Masons and Shriners, organizations through which he extended his service and brotherhood.
Donald's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved the simple pleasures in life. He was an avid reader, often losing himself in the pages of a good book. His passion for old westerns was well-known, as was his talent for cooking and smoking meat—a skill that brought joy to many family gatherings. Donald's love for sipping whiskey, selling and fixing guns, and sharing stories with friends and family were the threads that wove the fabric of many cherished memories.
He was a loving father, survived by his daughter Leslie Stricker and her husband Cory, his son Troy Mackie and his wife Kelly, and his sister Paula Venable and her husband Jimmy. Donald's legacy continues through his grandchildren—Tabitha Mackie, Levi Mackie, Christian Mackie, Chelsea Wheeler, Nick Wheeler, Alex Wheeler, Steven Stricker, Luke Stricker, and Alexandra Stricker and several great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Louise Mackie, and the mother of his children, Melinda Troy. His presence as the patriarch of the family will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Donald would describe him as loving—a man whose actions spoke louder than words and whose warmth could light up a room. His love for his children and grandchildren was the cornerstone of his existence, and the memories created with them will be treasured forever.
As we bid farewell to Donald Leroy Mackie, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with purpose, joy, and an abundance of love. His story is not one of an end but a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide us. Donald's journey on earth has concluded, but his spirit remains a guiding light for all who had the honor of sharing in his life's path.
Rest in peace, Donald. Your memory will be a beacon of love and strength for generations to come.
