Floyd M. ""Mel"" Keefer 63 of Amarillo died Saturday August 28, 2010 at the Thomas E. Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Services will be at 3:00 PM Tuesday at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel with Victor Contreras officiating. Military Honors will be rendered by Fort Hood Honor Guard, Fort Hood, Texas. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. SFC Retired Keefer was born in Middleport, OH. He moved to Amarillo in 1999 from Fayetteville, NC. Mr. Keefer joined the Army on November 5, 1965. He served 2 tours with the 82nd Air Borne Div. during the Vietnam War. He received numerous medals and commendations including the Master Parachute Badge, the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1988. After retiring from the Army, Mr. Keefer worked as a truck driver for several different companies including Conway Freight. Mr. Keefer helped raise Alex Boyles, whom he lovingly referred to as ""Little Man"" and Alex called him ""My Mel"" He is survived by , his companion, Elma Roby of the home, his special grandson, Alex Boyles of the home; 2 sons, Butch Keefer and his wife Linda of Superior, CO, Jeremy Keefer and his wife Rachel Goodnow of Brighton, CO; their mother, Sarah Keefer of Denver, CO; 4 grandchildren, Domonic Keefer, Ariel Keefer, Jayce Keefer and Jenelle Keefer; 2 sisters, Susie Smith and Lily Browning both of Point Pleasant, WV and a brother William Howard ""Bill"" Keefer of Houston. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
