Gilberta Arleen Van Marter

Gilberta Arleen van Marter, age 86, of Amarillo. TX was surrounded by her loved ones when she passed away on January 7, 2025, in Amarillo.

She was born in Boston, MA. She grew up in Warwick, RI. She was one of the members of the first graduating class of Warwick Veterans High School in 1956. She married John Bruce Van Marter on June 11, 1960, in Rochester, NY. She then moved to Corning, NY and had Two sons and then moved to Los Alamos, NM in 1966. While in Los Alamos, she had another son. She and John remained married for 23 years. She returned to Rhode Island in 1984 and finally relocated to Amarillo, TX in 2004.

She received her A.A.S. in Business Administration from the Community College of Rhode Island in 1987. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa (National Honor Society). She received her Real Estate Sales License in the late 1990s in Rhode Island. She was, from a young age, deeply involved with multiple Masonic Organization including the International Order of Rainbow Girls, Warwick RI Chapter: Mother Advisor, Eastern Star and Amaranth: Worthy Advisor and Royal Matron of Honor for both the Los Alamos, NM Chapter and the State of New Mexico Chapter.

She was preceded in death by her son John Robert Van Marter, her sister Wendy Suzanne Johnson and her brother Richard William Jeffers.

She is survived by sons Eric Wiliam Van Marter and Scott Lyle Van Marter and wife Fala Dawn Van Marter, Granddaughter Kyra Ann Van Marter, all of whom reside in Amarillo, TX. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Paul Eric Johnson of South Kingston, RI and by three nieces.

There will be a memorial service at Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage, Amarillo TX on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 1:00pm.

Her ashes will be interred at Glenwood Cemetery, Washington Avenue in Everett, MA at a later date.

In lieu of flowers she requested that donation be made in her name to (RAINN) National Sexual Abuse Hotline. Memorials will be accepted at Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage Amarillo, TX 79103
