Gordon Len (Bill) Stafford, Jr., 79, of Amarillo died Sunday, March 7, 2010. Bill was born in McLean, Texas, May 3, 1930, to Gordon Len Stafford and Mary Wise Stafford. He married Florita Young on June 22, 1963, in Fort Worth, Texas. A graduate of Lefors High School, he was a member of the class of 1953 at Texas A & M University. After serving in the United States Navy as an instructor pilot, he was an oil and gas operator and then began a career of exploring, evaluating, and developing ground water as Vice-President of Groundwater Surveys, Inc. and President of G. L.Stafford and Associates. Bill served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 48 in Dumas, Texas, awarded the Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow and earned the honor of Wood Badge. He was a former member of the American Water Resources Association, the American Geophysical Union, the Red River Valley Authority, the Deaf Smith Nuclear Waste Oversight Committee, and the Texas A & M Association of Former Students. He devoted his time and energy to promote the freedoms as established by America's founding fathers and to preserve the way of life he believed in, lived and loved. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter Hannah Shae George. Survivors include his wife Flo; two sons: Wyatt and wife Marta of Austin; Steve and wife Barbara of Abilene; two daughters: Alyssa George and husband Dean of Euless; Shannon Wingo and husband Carl of Cypress; seven grandchildren: Whitney Larsen and husband Todd; Robert Stafford and wife Sheri; Braeley and Caden George; and Reagan, Clayton and Hayden Wingo; four great-grandchildren: London and Arden Larsen and Troy and Olivia Stafford; two step-granddaughters: Joanna Contreras and husband Paul, and sons Jason and Kevin; Tylan and Sasha and son Jake; Stacey McGee and husband James and children Reilly, Darby, Caden and Amara. Bill was a member of The Church at Quail Creek. According to his wishes, his body has been donated to the Texas Tech Medical School in Lubbock, and family memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to M. D .Anderson Cancer Center--Children's Cancer Hospital: P.O. Box 4486 Houston, TX 77210-4486 in honor of Clayton Wingo.
