Howard Glenn Elliott Sr., 87, of Canyon passed away peacefully in his home Friday August 21,2020. Service will be 2:00 pm Friday August 28, 2020 at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, officiated by his grandson, Pastor Daniel Mooney. Interment will be at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage. The family will receive guests Wednesday and Thursday August 26 and 27 6:30-8 Pm at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel. Howard Glenn Elliott Sr. was born March 14, 1933 to Carl and Lyle Elliott in Amarillo. He was very well known in the racing community. His racing career started in 1950 at the age of 17, moving throughout the different classes through the years. His racing career ended at the age of 84 years old. Howard won many races and was a contender to win the championship in 2002 at the age of 60. The Amarillo Globe News published an article on August 12, 2007, celebrating the 74 year old Elliott as the oldest driver on the track and in the Top Ten in his racing class. In 2016, Howard was inducted into the Amarillo Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was an all-around good guy that helped so many people at the racetrack. He married the love of his life, Joyce Johnson on January 13, 1951. They had four children together. They were married for 17 years. He was a Baptist and enjoyed teaching Sunday school classes. Howard truly loved the Lord and gave his life to Jesus. Howard was a jack of all trades, he worked as a meat market manager, worked at Plains Chevrolet and sold insurance before he opened his own shop (Mend-It Automotive) for 30 years. He was a good mechanic. He could tune an engine based off the way it sounded. He served in the United States Navy and earned the Rank of an E-8, Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Naval Achievement medal and the National Defense medal. He served during the Operation Bay of Pigs. Howard loved to dance and could play any instrument. He did not have to take lessons, it came naturally. He learned on the piano and moved on to other instruments. He was a Wrestler out of the Maverick club, enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing. He was bigger than life and never met a stranger. Howard was a loving father, brother, and a friend to anyone who knew him. Howard is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Elliott. He is survived by three daughters, Deborah Upton and her husband Ricky, Sue Warren and her husband Lyndel, and Connie Krenning and her husband Charlie; one son, Howard Elliott Jr. and his wife Heidi; two sisters, Lynnell Hodel, and Jean Lahrs; one brother, Carl Dee Elliott and his wife Lura; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
