James Gerald Kennann, affectionately known as Gerald, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 83. Born on July 25, 1941, in Altus, Oklahoma, Gerald was a man whose life was characterized by his unwavering love for his family, his country, and the simple joys that life had to offer.
Gerald was preceded in death by his loving parents, James Robert and Ethel Mae Kennann. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his cherished wife, Deena Kennann, his devoted sons, Travis Kennann and his wife Melissa of Dallas, Texas, and Jason Wheeler and his wife Tabatha of Panhandle, Texas. His daughter, Melody Porter, and her husband Colby of Panhandle, Texas, also survive him. Gerald's joy was multiplied by his grandchildren, Kylie Kennann, Cody Kennann, Josh Harris, Justin Harris, Makena Porter, Taden Wheeler, and Jaycee Wheeler, and his great-grandson, Mateo. His twin sister, Jannette Massey and her husband David of Amarillo, Texas, his sister Sheridon Dodson of Amarillo, Texas, and his sister Stephanie Nielsen and her husband Gary of Amarillo, Texas, will hold his memory dear, as will his brother-in-law, Darryl Dingus. Gerald's fur babies, Princess and Shadow, were also a special part of his life. Along with several Nieces and Nephews.
A proud graduate of Amarillo High School, Gerald's work ethic was evident throughout his career. He dedicated many years of service to Santa Fe Railroad, BNSF Railroad, and Bell Helicopter. His commitment to his work was matched only by his commitment to his country, as he was a proud Marine, serving with honor and distinction.
Gerald's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid fisherman and camper, finding solace and joy in the great outdoors. His love for spending time with his family was evident in every aspect of his life. A master of woodcraft, Gerald could often be found in his workshop, creating beautiful pieces that would become cherished family heirlooms. His hands were rarely still, as he was always busy fixing something or working on a project. His love for John Wayne movies was well-known, as was his fascination with watching the weather, particularly when "Doppler Dave" was on the air.
Trains held a special place in Gerald's heart, perhaps a nod to his time with the railroads. His sweet tooth was legendary, with M&Ms and Double Stuffed diabetic Oreos being his treats of choice. Those who knew Gerald best would describe him as loving, handy, and creative—a man who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand or come up with an ingenious solution to any problem.
Gerald's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and hard work. He approached every day with a sense of purpose and a desire to make the most of every moment. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the many lives he touched with his kindness and generosity of spirit.
As we bid farewell to Gerald, we take comfort in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of laughter, love, and the satisfaction of a job well done. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to inspire us every day.
His memory will be cherished, and his presence will be sorely missed.
