James Harold Reel Sr. a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2024, in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas. Born on September 14, 1950, to the late Jimmy and Jo Reel, James lived a full and vibrant life that left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
James attended Palo Duro High School Graduating in 1969, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of hard work and dedication. His career as a Superintendent with West Texas Contractors was a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. He was instrumental in constructing numerous buildings in Amarillo and at West Texas A&M University, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community.
James was a man who could be described as the human embodiment of YouTube, long before the internet. He had an uncanny ability to fix anything or teach anyone how to fix it. His hands were skilled, his mind sharp, and his willingness to help others was boundless. To his family, he was more than just a relative; he was their hero, a figure as revered as Clint Eastwood.
His love for life was evident in his passions. James was a supporter of the Dallas Cowboys and all Texas sports, a love he shared with many. He found joy in working and working hard he was always working, On anything from Engines, Boat Motors, Plumbing, Electrical and everything in between. His adventurous spirit led him to explore the beauty of the world, with Alaska cruises being among his favorite getaways.
James’s sense of humor was as legendary as his ability to build and mend. He was funny, stubborn, witty, sarcastic, ornery, caring, and kind—all rolled into one unforgettable character. Those who knew him were familiar with his quick wit that signaled the onset of a clever remark or a hearty laugh.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Reel, and his parents, Jimmy and Jo Reel. His legacy lives on through his children, James Reel Jr. and wife Julie of Bushland, Josh Reel of Amarillo, Angela Ulrich and husband Ryan of Happy, and Tara Judd and husband Mike. His grandchildren, Shiloh Reel, Hunter Reel, Rhett Reel, Joshua McNutt, Austin Reel, Jaren Alvarado, Alexis Reel, Bailey, Levi, Madilyn Ulrich, Michael, Madison, Collin, Timmy, Tyler, and Chelsei, along with eleven great-grandchildren, will forever cherish the memories and lessons he imparted. His sister, Jodi Tolbert, and his lady friend, Melva Davis, will also hold dear the time they spent with Him.
James Harold Reel Sr. was a man of many virtues. Kindness and generosity were his guiding principles, and his ability to fix anything made him indispensable to those around him. His life was a testament to the power of hard work, the importance of family, and the enduring strength of a caring heart.
As we bid farewell to James, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man well-loved, and a legacy that will continue to inspire. He was a true Texan, a loyal friend. His stories, his laughter, and his wisdom will be sorely missed, but the impact he made on our lives will never be forgotten.
