Joe Vasquez, Jr., 60 of Amarillo died Monday May 19, 2008 at the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center. Prayer services will be at 6:00 PM Thursday at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel. Interment will be at Llano Cemetery. Military Honors will be by the DAV Chapter #26. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Vasquez was born in south Texas. He graduated from Floydada High School in 1966. He joined the Army in 1967. He served with the 9th Infantry during the Vietnam War. He received several medals, including 2 bronze stars and the Army Commendation Medal for Outstanding Achievement. He was honorably discharged in 1970. After being discharged from the Army, Mr. Vasquez received a Bachelor's Degree in business administration from West Texas State University. He lived in Canyon 28 years before moving to Amarillo in 2006. He worked as an inspector for the Texas Department of Health, retiring in 2000. He married Sandy Harris in 1995 at Canyon. Mr. Vasquez was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Roberto, his Grandmother, Antonia Hernandez and a step-son, Troy Lee Main. Survivors include his wife of the home, 2 daughters, Melissa Ann Cervantes and her husband Felix, Jr., of Lubbock and Isabell V. Martinez and her husband Larry of Amarillo; a step-daughter, Tracy Olivarez of Amarillo; 7 sisters, Leonor Kohut of Farmington Hills, MI., Diana Avila, Raquel Guerrero,and Reina Garcia all of Sherman, Rebecca Magana of Dallas, Susanna Avila of Lubbock and Rosario Williamson of Plainview; 3 brothers, Federico Garibay of Napa Valley, CA, Rodolfo Garibay of Amarillo and Roy Garibay of Plainview; 3 grandchildren, Audry Martinez, Alexis Martinez and Felix Cervantes, III. The family requests memorial donations to a favorite charity.
