John was born in San Francisco on November 16, 1937. After graduating high school, the road led him East to South Carolina where he obtained his Associates Degree in Accounting from Palmer College located in Charleston. He went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Charleston Southern University and his Master of Business Administration from the Citadel, which he completed in 1977. He became a CPA in 1978 and continued his practice until 2019 when he retired. Aside from being a CPA, he also taught at three Universities (Fresno University in California, Lander College in South Carolina and finally at the University of Houston in Texas). One of his best memories was being the chapter advisor Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Lander College. He was also an initiated member of the Alpha Kappa Psi business Fraternity. His thirst for knowledge and learning never ended. He was always trying new things and continued to develop his skill set in business and on the golf course. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 57 years, served as the Exalted Ruler in the Houston area, held officer positions in other cities and states and went on to be a part of the Houston Ritual team that won numerous awards for their mastery of the Elks rituals and traditions. He was also an active member of the Eagles Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. He thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and traveling the US and Canada. He was often told he should have been a truck driver as much as he liked to drive across country. He was constantly making jokes and would absolutely participate in anything that was fun, silly, and potentially embarrassing for himself or others. He lived life to the fullest and gained many friends along the way. He is superseded in death by his father Peter Spier, his mother Rose Spier, his brother Bill Zimmerman, his sister Harriet Zimmerman, and his sister Maureen Brown. He is survived by his wife of 21 years Vanese Spier; her daughter Auralie Ruggeire and husband Paul; her son David Edwards and wife Susan; his daughter Allana Spier Frischenmeyer and her husband Keith; his daughter Pam McCarren and her husband Ken; his son David Nielsen; and his daughters Cathy Hefler and husband Dave and Robin Dobisky; his sister Shirley Cash and husband Jack as well as 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
