Larry D. Gafford, a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on March 3, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. Born on January 12, 1947, in Clovis, New Mexico to Emma and James Gafford. Larry's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the simple joys that make life worth living.
After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1966, Larry embarked on a career that would define much of his life. He was a skilled meat cutter and took pride in his craft. Even after retirement, Larry's tireless work ethic shone through; he continued to contribute to the community by delivering parts for O'Reilly Auto Parts right until his final days. His commitment to providing for his family and serving others was unwavering and truly admirable.
Larry's life was anchored by a deep love for his wife of 20 years, Linda Gafford (Hennig). Together, they built a life full of joy, laughter, and precious memories. He was a loving father to his children, Gary, Scott, Corey, Crystal, Randy, and Diana, and a beloved brother to his sisters, Ruth, Rose (Larry) and Winnie (Brad). His presence as a grandfather was a gift to his numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who will cherish their memories of him.
A man of faith, Larry lived his Christianity with quiet strength and grace. He found solace and purpose in his beliefs, and they guided him throughout his life. His interests were as unique as they were varied. An avid collector, Larry's passion for knives, flashlights, ball caps, and vendor ink pens was well-known among his family and friends. His connoisseurship extended to food, where his discerning palate and love for culinary delights were always a topic of friendly conversation.
Larry's enthusiasm for cars, Nascar and car shows, where he reveled in the craftsmanship and nostalgia of classic automobiles. This same attention to detail and appreciation for tradition could be seen in his choice to always visit the same barber at FNB Barbershop, where the camaraderie was as important as the haircut.
Those who knew Larry would describe him as loving, kind, and optimistic. He approached life with a positive outlook that was infectious, often lifting the spirits of those around him. His kindness extended beyond his immediate circle, touching the lives of many within his community.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and James Gafford, and his family members Arthur, John Wesley, and Nancy Ann. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his legacy of love, perseverance, and joy for life will live on through the stories shared by those who knew him best.
