Luther Upton Johns

Luther Upton Johns, 80 of Amarillo died Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 am Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel with Chris Kutin officiating. Interment will be at Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon, OK. Military honors will be by Volleys For Veterans. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Johns was born in Ocala, FL. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War where he was deployed twice. He was honorably discharged in 1970. Luther lived in Guymon for many years where he worked for Dresser Engineering as a millwright. After his retirement, Luther worked at Wal Mart in Guymon and Dumas He moved to Amarillo in 2003 from Dumas. Luther married Jennie Lou Rhodes in 1974 in Guymon. She preceded him in death in 1987. He was also preceded in death by his son David in 2002. He loved woodworking and carpentry. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed cooking, and was a big fan of John Wayne. He is survived by three daughters, Gracie Lyn Padilla and her husband Gabe of Amarillo, DeAnn Pierce and her husband Mark of Waverly, TN and Virginia Dickey and her husband Luther of Lawton, OK; ten grandchildren, Steve, Kenny, Becky, Gina, Chad, Crystal, Casey, Cameron, Tatum, and Taniel; 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Thomas E. Creek VAMC Hospice Unit, 6010 Amarillo Blvd. W., Amarillo, Texas 79106.
