Oleta Akers, of Amarillo, peacefully drifted off to be with her Lord Friday June 12, 2009. She was 97. Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday at Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. Visitation will be held Tuesday June 16, from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Oleta was born May 20, 1912 in Abernathy, Texas to Edward Jones Smith and Esla Idella McGee. She attended school in Happy and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1931. She married Thomas Howard Akers in 1934 and they were married for 50 years. They had one daughter; Barbara Ann. Oleta was a charter member of East Amarillo Church of Christ where she taught Bible class to three-year-olds for over 40 years. She worked for Levines Department Store from 1928 until her retirement as head cashier in 1972. She was also a long time member of Potter County Home Extension. She is preceded in death by her husband Tom in 1985, her grandson Daniel Chamberlin in 1993, and her four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Ann and husband Dave Chamberlin of Morrison, CO. Grandchildren Leslie and Bryan Herber of Amarillo, Dave and Luann Chamberlin of Indianapolis, Charissa Kennedy of Gillette, Wyoming, and Deanna Stone of White Deer; 10 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and a myriad of loving nieces and nephews and dear friend Lila Strimple of Amarillo.
