Richard B. Gordon, 78, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 12th, 2024, surrounded by his loving friends and family.
Graveside services are scheduled for Monday July 14, 2024 10 am at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas.
Richard was born on May 19th, 1946, in Brownfield, Texas, to Rubye Adams Gordon and Bert Gordon. He grew up in Lazbuddie, Texas.
Richard was unconquerable, throwing himself into many careers with an entrepreneurial spirit that carried him through numerous challenges. He displayed a peerless work ethic from an early age. From working on the family farm, butchering at a small-town market, and driving buses to owning businesses ranging from Total Oil Field Services operating in Texas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. He managed and owned gas stations, an antique store, and Mr. Richard’s Beauty Salon, just to name a few. He finally found his true calling with Vibra Whirl Sports Surfaces of Panhandle, Texas, working his way from the road crew all the way to Vice President of Construction in a career spanning nearly 40 years.
He lived a life in service to others and was active in the community. He worshiped at the Chaparral Hills Baptist Church, being much loved by the congregation. He was generous with his love, fellowship, and time to everyone regardless of their background or station. He loved God with every fiber of his being and served the Lord through his deeds, not words. When he came upon a friend or stranger in need, they need not ask him for help. He had already rolled up his sleeves and jumped in to work until the job was done. Building fences, plowing fields, fixing tractors, no task was too big to scare off Richard the Great and Mighty!
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Corina; his brother-in-law, Bob; his daughters, Shelli (Tedd) and Michael (Chris); his sons, Robert (Carrie) and Robin (Dawn); his nieces, Melanie and Melissa; his nephews, Matt (Kristin) Scott (Tammy); and his beloved 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Rubye; his brother, Jimmy; sister-in-law, Carolynne; his sister, Alice; his son, Jay; his great-granddaughter, Paige and his best friend from an early age Darrell.
Richard was humble, funny, and full of life. Known by many names – Mr. Richard, Daddy, Papa, Honey, but most famously to his kids as Ricardo Von Whippersnapper. He was far too humble to accept any of this praise, but he cannot stop us now. You are loved, you are missed, and you are with us always.
To honor Richard’s generous spirit, In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his honor to the charity of your choosing.
