Wanda June Thorn

Wanda June Thorn, 83 passed away in her home in the afternoon of August 31, 2021. Funeral services will be held in the Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel in Amarillo, TX on 2:00 pm Friday, September 3, 2021. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery where she will be laid to rest between her husband, Billy H. Thorn, and her infant grandson, Cody Wayne Thorn. Wanda was born on February 11, 1938, in Eastland, TX to Lee Roy and Annie Lee (Watson) Robinson the third of six children. Her family moved often as they followed the fruit harvest in the Rio Grande Valley and farming opportunities in other areas of Texas. However, she spent most of her childhood in Eastland County. Wanda married Billy Harold Thorn in December of 1954 and due to his military service, they soon made their home in Chicago, Illinois. Later, they were transferred to Fairbanks, Alaska where their first-born child, Becky, was born in March of 1956. Soon thereafter, they moved to Amarillo and later to Irving, Texas. Finally, in 1970, the family returned to make their home in Amarillo. Wanda worked in the foodservice department in Sunrise Elementary School and eventually accepted a similar position at the old ST. Anthonys Hospital where she served until her retirement, in 1996. At that time, she returned to AISD and worked at Humphrey Highland Elementary School retiring from them in 2012. She loved her family and offered a home and a hand up to anyone in need. having raised her children, as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a kennel of dogs and puppies. She loved clearing the dining table of the banquet of food, so she could enjoy a good Sunday afternoon card game with family members. Wanda is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy Harold Thorn Three children, Rebecca (Becky) Hartwell, Billy Ray Thorn, and Marvin Thorn; one grandson, Cody Wayne Thorn one great-grandson, Mason Young two sisters, Velma Srader, and Alice Clark; three brothers; Kennith, James, and John Doyle Robinson. She is survived by a son, Jerry Thorn of Amarillo, ten grandchildren; Debbie Furrh, Danny Kent, Natasha Thorn, Claudia Alexander, Melissa Grimsley, Shawn Grimsley, Justin Grimsley, Danielle Thorn, Felisha Davidson, and LaTasha Hernandez, her most recent caregiver. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses and health care team of High Plains Senior Care for the incredible love, kindness, and care shown to Wanda and to all of us during these past few weeks. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimers Association.
